Jersey Clipper                                        © Julian Shaw, 2005

What is it makes the few take on the challenge

Of racing round the world ‘cross all the seas

In boats that are themselves so small and fragile

When judged against the worst that nature brings

We know we have our reasons deep inside us

And clearly there’s still knowledge that we lack

The race will ask of us some searching questions

But we know we’ll have some answers when we’re back

We are sailing on the seas for Jersey Clipper

In search of things we yet have come to know

We are sailing hard and looking for adventure

We are alive and free

Just being you and me

Out on the rolling sea

A thousand miles from home

Fifty thousand people stood by watching

As loved and not-so-loved ones took their leave

Some to return to situations altered

Some to return with modified beliefs

Oh what a sight it was to see them mustered

Close quartered on the Mersey all apace

Ten ships with their multicoloured beauty

It’s Leg One, it’s Brazil and it’s the race!

We are sailing on the seas for Jersey Clipper

In search of things we yet have come to know

We are sailing hard and looking for adventure

We are alive and free

Just being you and me

Out on the rolling sea

A thousand miles from home

We are alive and free

Just being you and me

Out on the rolling sea

A thousand miles from home
