Well, the 3rd Jersey Clipper campaign has come to an end. What an exciting and eventful year it has been. Hopefully everyone has enjoyed following the race here on www.jerseyclipper.com . It remains only to thank our main sponsors UBS, Dandara and Les Pas Holdings for their tremendous support, Itex for sponoring this web site, and to our committee who have worked tirelessly for the last 2 years to put the campaign together. Thanks to you - our supporters - and to the many others who have contributed in special ways. Will there be a "Jersey Clipper" in the 2007/8 Clipper Round The World Yacht Race?? Maybe! Watch this space... To all those who feel the urge to do something truly unforgettable, to really go out there and live life, to make the dream a reality... go for it!!! http://www.clipper-ventures.co.uk/2006/content/0708/ |

The 11-month race around the world has now come to an end. Jersey Clipper has just fought her final battle to secure an overall 9th place against Glasgow Clipper who were only 1.5 points behind. With a possible 5 points available for the sprint from Holyhead to Liverpool, Jersey had to finish ahead of Glasgow or at the most 2 places behind them. In the end Jersey crossed this finish line in 8th place with Glasgow taking 10th after retiring in light winds, so Jersey retained her overall 9th place. The crew currently on board - be they round the worlders or leggers will now enjoy the glorious welcome of many thousands of supporters as they sail up the River Mersey and receive a gun salute under the famous Liver Building. They will be joined on the pontoon by their crewmates who took part in previous legs - just as much a part of this 35,000 mile relay team as those who are on board for the final leg. The disappointment of not having collected any of the coveted race pennants of the podium places for the 13 individual races was put to one side at the final finish line with a round of emotion-laden hugs between all the crew on board. Their lack of fortune on this race in no way diminishes the team's achievement. More people have reached the summit of Mount Everest than have sailed around the world, and the extra challenges that this year's Jersey entry has encountered simply increases their accomplishment. Each crew member set out to have their own adventure, and they have certainly had them. Congratulations to them all. As happens at every stopover the huge rivalry that exists between the 10 crews while at sea will quickly be put to one side and our crew will be helping the WesternAustralia.com team celebrate their overall victory. Overall positions in this race quickly pale into insignificance, eclipsed by the real success of everyone's personal achievement. Lifelong friendships have been formed, boundaries have been expanded, and the crew have discovered new depths to themselves. For those of us who have been watching their progress from afar it has been a priviledge to share the adventure with them and to get to know these exceptional people who have had the courage to go out and live their dream. |

Friday - wind N F2-3 becoming NE, sunny periods becoming cloudier. Risk of a shower, 27°C. Over night it will be cloudy and misty scattered thunderstorms. For the boats still out there, the winds will be northerly force 2-3 becoming north easterly. Saturday - winds variable force 1-3 becoming westerly, a risk of thundery showers at first, then sunny periods developing, 26°C. Fair in the evening with light winds, pleasant picnic weather!
Sunday - wind south west to south force 1-3, mainly sunny, 26°C. (Nice weather for the corporate sailing - or boat maintenance!) Fair or fine and mild in the evening for the prizegiving party (16°C). Monday - sunny and warm (27°C) with a variable light winds.
This has the makings of a great stopover in terms of weather, and with light winds forecast for the weekend it is good that the finish line has been moved ensuring that the whole fleet get to enjoy the full stopover.
The wind forecast for the race restart on Tuesday evening is easterly force 4-5, becoming force 2-3, so not bad for the channel crossing. It will be cloudy and misty with the risk of thundery showers. |

On Saturday evening the crews enjoyed drinks and nibbles in the street outside the St. Helier Town Hall where they received an official welcome from Simon Crowcroft, the Connetable of St. Helier - equivalent to a UK Lord Mayor. They then boarded busses at St. Helier Harbour for the transfer to Durrell Wildlife where the crews heard of the international conservation work of the Durrell Wildlife Trust before going on to watch the gorillas being fed in their beautiful enclosure. A sumptuous picnic was enjoyed on the grass and at tables within the grounds - a string quartet playing in the background - before a transfer back to the main town where some of the crews went on to enjoy St. Helier's nightlife. On Sunday evening the crews visited the 13th century Mont Orgueil castle where they were taken back in time with demonstrations of weaponry, falconry and tours of the historic castle before enjoying a delicious meal within the grounds. The prizegiving was held on the upper level of the castle with the island silhouetted by the setting sun. The beautiful voices of the Harmony Men drifted across Grouville Bay as they sang in the halflight of evening. It was a truly memorable occasion and a fitting end to the weekend. On Monday evening Jersey crews both past and present were welcomed at the St. Helier Yacht Club for a drinks reception and the chance to be the first to see the video filmed onboard Jersey Clipper on their Atlantic crossing, together with the dramatic video of the rescue of an injured crewmember from the boat by the crew of the US Coastguard icebreaker Healy during their North Pacific crossing. The Healy crew have since been decorated for their work in this dramatic rescue. The evening ended with a chance to see the stunning and very entertaining film produced by Shane Smart, the cameraman from Transworld International who was onboard Jersey Clipper for the final Atlantic crossing. It was a fantastic stopover and we hope that the 300 or so visitors to the island - including the other Clipper crews and their families who came to support the race - had as good a time as we locals did! |

| 03/05/2006 12:40 | New skipper appointed - welcome to Richard Franklin | Clipper Ventures Plc has appointed a new skipper for Jersey Clipper. He is British sailor Richard Franklin, 43, who has just taken second place in the ‘Challenge Business Round Ireland Race’ as skipper of ‘The Spirit of Sark.’
He will join Jersey Clipper during the next stopover in Victoria, Canada, to complete the final two legs of the race back to Liverpool, including the stopover in Jersey between 21-25 July.
Richard started out his career as a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, followed by ten years working in the financial services sector for brand leaders such as UBS (one of Jersey Clipper's sponsors along with Dandara and Les Pas Holdings) before he was drawn towards his passion of ocean racing. For over ten years Richard has run his own yacht charter company while building his racing career. He had already been in talks with Clipper Ventures to skipper a yacht in the 07-08 Race before he got the call from the Clipper race team.
Richard was in Jersey after finishing the inaugural Round Ireland Race when he began discussions with Race Director, Tim Hedges, and puts this opportunity down to “being in the right place at the right time!”
On discussing his ambitions for the race, Richard said: “Winning is always important. I’ll certainly do my very best to get Jersey as far up the rankings as possible. It is also very important that everyone gets round safely and that the crew who have signed up get out of it everything that they wanted and expected.
“My style is very much trying to get the best out of everyone. I’ll analyse everyone’s strengths and weaknesses, see which areas need the most work and go from there.”
The new skipper will replace predecessor Mark Taylor, who left the race in Qingdao, China, and temporary skipper Simon Rowell who stepped up to the helm to take the Channel Island boat across the Pacific Ocean to Canada. Simon was winner of the Clipper 02-03 race on board the previous Jersey Clipper.
Richard is due to arrive in Victoria on 12 May to prepare for leg six to Panama City and on to Jamaica. It is hoped that he will be able to visit Jersey before he departs for Canada so that he can meet the Jersey media and talk to Jersey Clipper's supporters and sponsors. | | |
